Patient can suffer from either a dental phobia or dental anxiety. Dental phobia is a severe condition where a patient experiences intense fear of the dentist. This fear is often unreasonable, causing a patient to avoid the dentist for years or even decades. Dental anxiety causes patient to have moderate fear that causes unease before an appointment. Both conditions can be treated by working closely with your dentist to avoid trigger and set your mind at ease.
Most anxiety in the dental field is rooted in a poor past experience. Dentistry has had major advancements in the past few decades and many are focused on creating a more calming environment for patients. For patient with mild dental anxiety we are happy to offer nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas. Laughing gas can be used to immediately relieve anxiety and offers very little side effects. The effects wear off moments after use, allowing you to be relaxed for your appointment and then continued on with your busy day!
For patient who suffer from moderate to severe dental anxiety we do offer oral sedation in the form of Triazolam. Triazolam is a short acting benzodiazepine that acts to suppress anxiety during an appointment. Patient often feel more relax and can possibly fall asleep during their appointment.
